Opal Peak Scramble - Jasper National Park

Updated: Feb 9, 2021

I had done the Opal Meadows trail during my first summer in Jasper in 2018. I didn’t realise until 2019 that there is a peak next to the meadows that is hikeable. Lauren, Katie and I hiked up the steep start of the trail (I believe that it is the steepest hike in Jasper?! Someone fact check me?!) and then came to a junction and took a right which takes you up the right hand (southern) side of the meadows trail which is where the trail to the peak starts. Once you leave the meadows the trail continues straight ahead, once it turns to rock, the trail to the left should appear. Once you are on the rock trail it is very obvious where to go to reach the summit. The summit is quite small and there is a cairn and a summit register in a fancy pink metal case with stickers on it. On the descent, we decided to head straight down the mountain and the hit meadow directly below us. The style of rock on Opal is the perfect rock for scree skiing so it’s amazingly fast to scree ski down. The scree ski down was my favourite part of the day!
