Saskatchewan Glacier Hike - Banff National Park

Updated: Jul 15, 2021

This is an incredible hike which is roughly 15 km return and has only 275m elevation gain. Heading down the Icefields Parkway from Jasper the parking lot is not signposted but it is on the far side of the big bend or toilet bowl. There is a bridge over a canyon immediately in front of the ‘parking lot’.

The blue marker is roughly where the trailhead is

How to find the correct trail is the next step and do not make the mistake that we did. Once you walk over the bridge, make a right turn immediately! The trail will follow the river that follows the road. It will feel a bit silly for a few minutes because you will be thinking why couldn’t we have just parked at the other parking lot we are walking towards (it should be on the other side of the river). The trail finally veers off and starts heading up into the trees. This is where you will gain most of the elevation for the day in this one section.

After another few km's the glacial plain will open up and Saskatchewan Glacier and Lake will appear. And bam you are here.. Walk to your favourite spot and have your lunch. Do not walk on the glacier unless you are trained to travel on a glacier and have the skills/experience. Now take the same trail that you took in back to your vehicle and your day is now significantly better from the choices you made earlier that day. Congrats.
