Whirlpool backcountry campground is the PERFECT quick overnight getaway or the perfect first backcountry trip. Normally you can drive very close to Moab Lake, which is a great spot for fishing but remember you need a fishing permit in the national park. The campground is only 6.6 kms from the trailhead which is at the end of Moab Lake road.
The trail to Whirlpool is an old fire road so it’s very gradual and easy. I have run from Moab lake to Whirlpool and back just for a workout. I met a guy who was stayed there you had just traversed solo from the Fryatt Valley and had almost died at the Simon Creek crossing. If by any chance you are reading this, reach out to me! I tell your story regularly and it's such an epic tale.
Bikes are allowed on this fire road as well so if you prefer to bike pack it then this is a great option. When my Danielle and I went the road was still closed so we biked the Moab Road and then locked our bikes at the trailhead and hiked the rest of it.
The campground has been recently fitted out with new bear lockers and had a big upgrade in recent years. The views from campground are incredible and despite the trail being kind of boring this trip is 100% worth it just for the campground views.
